An airdrop is a method of distributing cryptocurrency tokens for free to selected wallet addresses, usually as part of a project’s strategy to boost awareness, grow its user base, and promote decentralization. Rather than being random giveaways, most airdrops are designed with specific goals, such as marketing campaigns, rewarding loyal users, or distributing governance tokens.
Common types include snapshot-based airdrops, where tokens are sent to holders of a certain coin at a specific point in time; activity-based airdrops, which reward users who interact with a protocol; and claim-based airdrops, which require users to take action—like connecting a wallet or using a dApp. Some airdrops are delivered without notice as surprise drops.
Airdrops can be powerful tools for onboarding users and building communities, but they also raise concerns. In many countries, receiving an airdrop may trigger a taxable event. Users should also be wary of scam airdrops that exploit fake claiming processes to steal funds or private keys.
As the crypto space evolves, airdrops continue to serve as a bridge between blockchain innovation and user adoption—rewarding engagement while encouraging decentralization.
