Backrunning is a form of Maximal Extractable Value (MEV) where a bot monitors pending transactions and quickly places its own transaction to follow a profitable one. Unlike frontrunning, which seeks to preempt the original transaction, backrunning aims to benefit from its aftermath—such as a price shift caused by a large trade or liquidation. This tactic is common in DEXs and liquid staking, especially in chains with public mempools. While legal, excessive backrunning can increase gas competition and negatively impact user experience and fairness.
