The smallest unit of digital information, used in computing and cryptography to represent binary states.
A bit, short for binary digit, is the most basic unit of digital data in computing and cryptography. It can have a value of 0 or 1, representing two distinct states such as true/false, on/off, or yes/no. Bits are used to encode and process all forms of digital information, including blockchain transactions, cryptographic keys, and hash functions. In cryptocurrencies, bits are also informally used to refer to small subdivisions of Bitcoin, though 'satoshi' is the official term. Eight bits make a byte, the standard size for data storage and transmission.
