The 'dark forest' metaphor describes the competitive, adversarial nature of blockchain mempools, where sophisticated bots monitor pending transactions for profit opportunities—known as MEV (Maximal Extractable Value). In this environment, any public transaction can be front-run, back-run, or sandwiched by automated strategies, especially on Ethereum. The term comes from a sci-fi novel and was popularized by a 2020 blog post detailing an MEV extraction incident. Solutions include private mempools, encryption (e.g. Flashbots Protect), and MEV-aware sequencing. The dark forest highlights the trade-offs between transparency and safety in blockchain systems.
