Delegated Proof of Stake (DPoS)

Also known as: DPoS, Delegated Stake Consensus, Witness-Based Consensus

A consensus mechanism where stakeholders elect a small group of delegates to validate transactions and secure the network.

Consensus Mechanisms
Intermediate level
Delegated Proof of Stake (DPoS) is a consensus algorithm used by some blockchain networks to achieve agreement on the state of the ledger. In DPoS, token holders vote to elect a fixed number of delegates (also called validators or witnesses) who are responsible for validating transactions and producing new blocks. This model enhances scalability and transaction throughput while retaining decentralization via governance by stakeholders. DPoS is used in networks like EOS, TRON, and Steem. However, it has been critiqued for potentially enabling cartelization or centralization among elected validators.
