EVM equivalence refers to the exact replication of Ethereum’s execution environment—including opcodes, gas metering, and internal behaviors—by a Layer 2 network or another blockchain. This goes beyond simple EVM compatibility by ensuring that every smart contract and transaction behaves identically to how it would on Ethereum Layer 1. This property simplifies developer migration, reduces auditing overhead, and ensures tooling interoperability. Examples of EVM-equivalent platforms include Optimism (Bedrock) and zkSync Era, which aim to provide seamless scaling without altering Ethereum semantics.
