Instant Finality

Also known as: Immediate Transaction Finality, Irreversible Confirmation, BFT Finality

A property of some blockchains where transactions are confirmed immediately and cannot be reversed once included in a block.

Instant finality refers to a blockchain’s ability to confirm transactions immediately and irrevocably once they are included in a block. Unlike probabilistic finality—common in Proof of Work systems where multiple confirmations are needed—instant finality ensures that once a transaction is finalized, it cannot be rolled back. This is common in Proof of Stake systems using Byzantine Fault Tolerant (BFT) consensus, like Tendermint (Cosmos), HotStuff (Aptos), and GRANDPA (Polkadot). Instant finality improves user experience, security for financial transactions, and cross-chain communication reliability.
