Jailing

Also known as: Validator Timeout, Consensus Suspension, Temporary Validator Ban

A punishment mechanism in Proof of Stake blockchains where misbehaving validators are temporarily removed from consensus.

Jailing is a mechanism used in Proof of Stake (PoS) blockchains to penalize validators that exhibit malicious behavior or downtime. When a validator is jailed, it is excluded from participating in block production and reward collection for a specified period or until corrective actions are taken. Jailing helps maintain network reliability, encourages validator uptime, and deters dishonest activity. Chains like Cosmos and Terra implement jailing along with slashing. Validators can often be reactivated after meeting specific criteria or serving a penalty term, unlike slashing, which permanently reduces stake.
