Plasma is a Layer 2 scaling framework proposed for Ethereum that enables faster and cheaper transactions by creating 'child chains' that operate independently but periodically commit their state to the main Ethereum chain. Plasma chains process transactions off-chain and use fraud proofs to ensure security. If a user suspects malicious activity, they can submit a challenge to the main chain. Plasma improves scalability while maintaining a high degree of security and decentralization. Although surpassed by rollups in popularity, Plasma laid foundational concepts for off-chain scaling and exit mechanisms.
