Private Key

Also known as: Secret Key, Wallet Key, Crypto Signing Key

A secret cryptographic key that allows users to access, control, and sign transactions from a blockchain wallet.

A private key is a unique, secret string of characters that grants full access to a blockchain wallet and the assets it holds. It’s mathematically linked to a corresponding public key and wallet address. Private keys are used to sign transactions, proving ownership and authorizing the movement of funds. In non-custodial systems, users are solely responsible for safeguarding their keys. Loss or theft of a private key results in irreversible loss of assets. Private keys should never be shared and are often backed up using seed phrases or stored in secure hardware wallets.
