Synthetic Asset
Also known as: Tokenized Derivative, DeFi Synthetic, Crypto Mirror Asset
A tokenized representation of a real-world asset or derivative, tracked via smart contracts and collateral.
A synthetic asset is a blockchain-based instrument that mimics the value of real-world or digital assets without requiring direct ownership. These are created using smart contracts and are usually overcollateralized to ensure price tracking. Synthetics enable exposure to stocks, commodities, fiat currencies, or even other cryptocurrencies in a decentralized manner. Protocols like Synthetix and Mirror Protocol issue synthetic tokens such as sUSD or mAAPL. They are essential for DeFi derivatives, permissionless finance, and composable asset strategies, though they involve risks like oracle dependency and liquidation.
