Cross-Chain Bridge
Also known as: Blockchain Bridge, Interoperability Bridge, Token Bridge
A protocol that enables token and data transfers between different blockchain networks.
A cross-chain bridge is a system that allows users to transfer tokens, messages, or data between two or more independent blockchain networks. It locks or burns assets on the source chain and mints or releases equivalent assets on the destination chain. Bridges can be trust-based (custodial) or trustless (smart contract-based), and are vital for interoperability in a multi-chain Web3 ecosystem. However, they are often complex and vulnerable to exploits, as shown by numerous high-profile bridge hacks. Leading examples include Wormhole, Multichain, and LayerZero.
